Male Sexual Health

As a male, there are a number of elements that can affect your sexual health and performance. Due to the diverse factors involved with properly treating each patient, we take a comprehensive approach in order to get to the root of your sexual health.
One of the more common issues that males face is poor sexual performance due to erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction is certainly nothing new to society.

History of Treatment for Erectile Dysfunction (This content could fit in a nice timeline graphic)

1930s - John R. Brinkley, the “Goat Gland Doctor”, discovered a way to transplant the testicles of goats into men who were experiencing impotence.

1950s-1970s – Dr. William H. Masters and his co-researcher, Virginia E. Johnson, conducted extensive research on the various causes of sexual dysfunctions.

Up until the 1970's, it was generally believed that the majority of ED was
psychological in nature. Because of that, members of the medical community treated patients with counseling in order to treat and effectively cure the problem. During that time, penile vacuum pumps were used in order to erect the penis by drawing blood into the penile tissue.

1973 - American Medical Devices developed inflatable prosthetic devices.

1980 - Intracorporal injections (ICP), such as alprostadil, were developed and used to treat ED.

Early ’90s - The herbal supplement, Yohimbine, was created but advised against

1999 - The pharmaceutical company, Pfizer, introduced Viagra (Sildenafil) to the medical community.

2000 - TAP Pharmaceutical Products developed the first oral centrally acting drug: Apomorphine HCL, marketed under the brand name Uprima.

1999-2003 - Vardenafil and Tadalafil entered the market.

In addition to the biological components associated with poor sexual performance, there are also psychological elements that we consider as well.

Psychogenic Causes of Erectile Dysfunction:

Anxiety
Depression
Fatigue
Guilt
Stress
Marital discord

Our comprehensive approach allows us to effectively treat each patient. Before prescribing any treatment or medication, we advise each patient to complete a thorough questionnaire known as the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF). This questionnaire is a useful tool that consists of 15 key questions that examine four areas in connection with male sexual performance:

Erectile function
Orgasmic function
Sexual desire
Intercourse satisfaction

At Defy, we know that proper treatment has to go beyond the “one-size-fits-all” approach. We offer a wide range of treatments and supplements designed to restore and enhance your sexual health and performance.

One of the more common types of treatments we offer is PDE-5 inhibitors.
PDE-5 inhibitors work by blocking or inhibiting the action of an enzyme called phosphodiesterase-5. This enzyme is naturally present in the corpus cavernosum, the spongy erectile tissue of the penis. Under normal circumstances, sexual arousal in the male stimulates neurons in the corpus cavernosum to release nitric oxide, a chemical compound that causes the formation of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). cGMP, in turn, causes the smooth muscle of the corpus cavernosum to relax and allow blood to flow into the penis and produce an erection.

PDE-5 breaks down cGMP, and so the PDE-5 inhibitors, by blocking the action of the
enzyme, maintain higher levels of cGMP and preserve a satisfactory erection.

Our doctors have developed successful protocols that look beyond erectile dysfunction. Their protocols aim to improve sex drive, sensitivity, and the patient’s ability to achieve orgasm. In addition, these protocols also analyze testosterone levels in order to properly treat men who experience low or sub-optimal testosterone levels.

Along with the variety of PDE-5 inhibitors available for treatment, we also offer penile injections. Unlike oral medications, these injections will trigger an automatic erection. These injections can be administered by the individual 5 minutes prior to sexual activity and should last for no more than 1 hour.
