Women and Hormone Restoration

One question we often receive is whether Testosterone Replacement Therapy can help women.

The answer is: It can.

Androgens are often thought to be male hormones, but female bodies produce and use Testosterone, as well. If the body decreases production of androgens like Testosterone, it can lead to a Testosterone deficiency and low-T symptoms.

Women can also experience deficiencies in female hormones like Estrogen and Progesterone.

Is hormone restoration only for menopausal women?

No – while hormone deficiencies are more common in women around the age of menopause, women of any age can experience hormone deficiencies. Similar to men, age is sometimes a factor – but not always.

Symptoms of a hormone deficiency can include:

  • Low libido and sexual dysfunction
  • Fatigue
  • Poor concentration
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Weight gain, and specifically fat gain around hard-to-lose areas like the tummy
  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Mood swings

Many times, premenopausal women don’t realize they are experiencing a hormone deficiency, which means they unfortunately suffer in silence from treatable symptoms.

Other types of hormone imbalances

Undiagnosed thyroid conditions can also lead to untreated deficiency symptoms.

The thyroid is responsible for producing thyroid hormones T3 and T4, which play many important functions throughout the body. Some of these functions include helping the body use energy, stay warm, and keep the brain, heart, muscles, and other organs working as they should.

Approximately 10 million Americans are likely to have hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), while as many as 10% of women may have some degree of thyroid hormone deficiency. Unfortunately, many of these individuals don’t realize it.

Symptoms of an underactive thyroid include:

  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Weight gain/difficulty losing weight
  • Coarse and dry hair
  • Hair loss
  • Dry, rough, and/or pale skin
  • Cold intolerance
  • Muscle cramps and aches,
  • Depression and irritability
  • Memory loss
  • Decreased libido

If you’re a woman experiencing any of the symptoms listed in this section, we encourage you to work with Defy and receive a comprehensive blood panel to evaluate your hormone levels. Many times, primary doctors do not take an in-depth look at hormone levels, which often leads to underdiagnosis of these conditions. Contact us now.

If you’re a male patient with Defy, and your spouse or partner is experiencing these symptoms, you can refer your partner to us by emailing Care@DefyMedical.com or calling 813-445-7342.
